The leather has a sheen of gloss on it which almost makes it appear to be rubber from a distance. I'm guessing it's that “sheen” that makes them waterproof. I wish it had a flat look instead of gloss. I like the style of the shoe, but the waterproof feature is not a selling point for me as I am too old to be playing out in the rain. The first thing I noticed is an annoying squeak from the left boot when I walked... I managed to get passed that but when one morning the zipper came off in my hand; I realized that this was truly a disappointing purchase. The only thing that I have a small issue with, but not bad enough to return is the opening is designed for a larger ankle than mine and there is no way to fix the problem. This was way too hard to get on... neither myself or my daughter could just slip into them. Never got a chance to wear them... when we finally got them on, couldn't get the zipper up. I don't do hiking or other Winter sports, however, I do use this shoe/boot for shoveling snow, walking in snow, etc. I, also, use it as a dress up boot when going to clients offices or homes.
